In addition to the 9% of enterprises in Swindon and Wiltshire that are in the ICT sector, organisations in many other sectors advertise computing and IT roles. In local government, Swindon Borough Council and Wiltshire Council have many IT roles, as do our NHS trusts, Great Western Hospital and Salisbury District Hospital and organisations like Zurich Insurance, Nationwide, the Ministry of Defence, UK Space Agency and DSTL. Swindon and Wiltshire is home to the Business Cyber Centre which opened in Chippenham in 2022. The centre will provide a range of services extending from virtual cyber training to security awareness for cyber-SMEs and micro-businesses, through to specialist courses and cyber career employment opportunities.
The computing, technology, digital and cyber security sectors has an array of jobs. They vary from hardware and network jobs which involves installing, servicing and monitoring networks for a business. You will be working with hardware and software and fixing problems for customers over the phone or face-to-face. Software is used in technology from computers, to phones to games, apps, or aeroplane navigation systems. All software has to be designed, developed and tested and there are lots of different jobs in this area. However not all jobs in the tech world are for techies. There are lots of jobs in IT and digital for people with great people skills such as relationship management which involves helping customers solve their technical problems.
It is predicted this sector will grow by 5.9% by 2027 creating more opportunties in computing, technology, digital and cyber security.

Red – Formal qualifications required – GCSEs Grades 4-9, Level 3 qualifications, A levels or Degree

Amber – Some formal qualifications may be required at Level 2 depending on the employer this will vary depending on the organisation and position

Green – No formal qualification required
